Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as a Senior AFP Layup Technician. In this role, you will play a crucial role in performing composite layup operations to manufacture high-quality composite parts. The ideal candidate should have at least five years of experience and possess advanced abilities and demonstrate expertise in material placement, orientation, and consolidation techniques. High proficiency in performing vacuum bagging and curing operations are also required for this role.

As a Senior AFP Layup Technician, you will not only be responsible for executing complex part builds with precision but will also train and mentor other technicians. Your extensive knowledge and experience in composite layup operations will be invaluable in guiding and supporting the professional development of your colleagues. Shift Schedules below:

1st shift - Monday – Thursday: 7AM- 5:30PM
2nd shift- Monday - Thursday: 5:30PM - 4:00AM
3rd shift -Friday - Sunday: 6AM - 6:30PM

Responsibilities

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) robot.
  • Assist in setting up and calibrating the AFP system for optimal performance, ensuring it aligns with the required parameters.
  • Gain hands-on experience in loading and unloading composite materials onto the AFP machine, ensuring proper alignment and placement for the lamination process.
  • Observe and assist in monitoring the AFP process during lamination, making necessary adjustments under supervision.
  • Participate in routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, inspecting, and replacing consumable components, while working alongside experienced technicians.
  • Learn to troubleshoot basic issues or malfunctions with the AFP system, with guidance from senior technicians or engineers.
  • Assist in conducting quality inspections on the laminated parts, contributing to the verification of adherence to specifications and identification of any defects or irregularities.
  • Document and record production data, including material usage and basic process parameters, while learning how to maintain accurate records.
  • Follow safety protocols and contribute to maintaining a clean and organized work area, promoting a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Collaborate with engineers, composite technicians, and programmers to improve the design and manufacturability of the AFP process.
  • Apply composite materials onto molds or tooling surfaces using techniques like hand layup or automated processes.
  • Ensure proper ply orientation, ply thickness, and material consolidation is achieved.
  • Adhere to requirements set by Quality Management System (QMS)

Required

  • HS Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • 4+ years of working with automated fiber placement machines or 5 Axis CNC Router Machines and demonstrated abilities to develop process, train team members, and high-level problem-solving skills
  • Ability to handle complex assignments and work independently with a high level of initiative to resolve issues
  • 4+ years of troubleshooting AFP Machines, deep understanding of uni-direction layup and technical limitations of AFP machines.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, time sensitive environments
  • Demonstrated abilities following standardized work instructions, technical requirements, and executing standard processes
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping purposes.
  • Experienced level in using computer software programs (i.e.- Google, Microsoft suite)
  • Continuous standing, squatting, bending, pulling, twisting, and lifting throughout the workday.
  • Lifting of 50 lbs. or less
  • Must wear PPE when required
  • Have no known allergies to epoxies or other composites materials and able to become certified to wear a respirator.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Ability to become forklift, crane, or equipment certified

Desired

  • Associate degree from a college or Trade School Certificate
  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) experience. Bonus: Experience in 5Axis CNC Machines
  • Fabrication and Welding experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working in a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Experience in a high-volume production environment that relies on a well-defined process to achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or 5S environments.

The target base pay for this position is $32-$44/hr.The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
