Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate, motivated and hands-on Senior Test Engineer on the Electro-Mechanical Test Team to aid in characterization, performance, environmental and reliability testing of powertrain & electronics system comprising of electric motor, inverter and related systems and/or components. This role is a member of the Integrated Product Team (IPT) and leads the testing efforts on verification and validation testing activities for the propulsion systems with specific emphasis on Electrical-Thermal Stress testing and Electromagnetic Magnetic Effects Testing (such as HIRF, RF Emissions, Lightning).

Responsibilities

  • Test preparation includes:
    • Test engineering: Identify test objective(s), collaborate with design and system engineers to devise test matrices, instrumentation needs, and outline detailed test procedures
    • Test article: Coordinate appropriate and configuration-controlled test articles to meet test objective(s)
    • Test Equipment: Work closely with Test Equipment Design Engineers to have custom test rigs built, assembled, operated, and maintained. Key contributions are defining requirements and expectations of the test stand/test setup to Test Equipment Design Engineers
  • Test execution includes:
    • Outline test execution schedule to ensure test equipment and resources are available to meet test objective(s)
    • Perform safe and thorough testing following Test engineering process to produce data that meet the needs of the program
    • Review and analyze data collected during/after testing to generate reports that will provide quantifiable feedback to the engineering teams that will allow them to optimize their designs and/or show compliance towards certification
  • Perform root cause investigation and analysis of sub-systems and components, documenting findings, and providing feedback to appropriate stakeholders for corrective action(s)
  • Work closely with the Test Program Manager to plan assigned work, report status and progress, and ensure tests are properly documented and closed out to meet program objectives
  • Work closely with Design Engineers, System Engineers, Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs), and Certification Engineers to verify that assigned electric motor, inverter and related systems and/or components meets or exceeds design requirements and provides necessary testing related information and documentation to meet FAA certification requirements
  • Author and/or contribute to the technical writing of Qualification Test Plans and Qualification Test Procedures (QTP) for certification
  • Balance iterative R&D testing and formal FAA witnessed Qualification testing
  • Experience and knowledge around HV safety threats, prevention best practices

Required

  • S. in Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline with 8+ years of work experience in a relevant industry performing Test Engineering activities or advanced degree and 6+ years of experience
  • Experience in high voltage electric motor/ inverter testing specifically around propulsion integration testing, durability and endurance testing
  • Practical experience with motor control algorithm and software verification and validation on powertrain electronics hardware
  • Practical experience in using miscellaneous lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, power analyzers, power supplies, etc.
  • Be agile and adapt to evolving requirements and change in directions

Desired

  • Dynamometer specific operation and testing experience is a plus
  • Experience testing airborne electronic hardware to DO-160, MIL-810 type (or similar standards) environmental tests. Prior DO-160 training is a plus
  • Practical knowledge of root cause analysis (nondestructive) of electronics failure best practices
  • Experience with MATLAB/Python for post-processing of data from equipment under test and external instrumentation.
  • Experience with LabView for Data Acquisition and test automation (invoking desired equipment functions in different conditions)
  • Knowledge of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) , Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) testing
  • Experience with aircraft FAA certification process
  • Strong physics and/or material properties background is a plus
  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering is a plus

Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $133,400 - $183,500/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
