May Mobility is transforming cities through autonomous technology to create a safer, greener, more accessible world. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, May develops and deploys autonomous vehicles (AVs) powered by our innovative Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) technology that literally reimagines the way AVs think.

Our vehicles do more than just drive themselves - they provide value to communities, bridge public transit gaps and move people where they need to go safely, easily and with a lot more fun. We’re building the world’s best autonomy system to reimagine transit by minimizing congestion, expanding access and encouraging better land use in order to foster more green, vibrant and livable spaces. Since our founding in 2017, we’ve given more than 300,000 autonomy-enabled rides to real people around the globe. And we’re just getting started. We’re hiring people who share our passion for building the future, today, solving real-world problems and seeing the impact of their work. Join us.

Job Summary

The Site Reliability Engineer is responsible for delivering 99.99% uptime for our headquarters and datacenter operations. We are strategically investing in our infrastructure and team to ensure unparalleled reliability and performance. The Site Reliability Engineer will partner with our existing Network Engineer and IT team, to be responsible for enhancing the stability, performance, and resilience of our critical network and server infrastructure. This role emphasizes a proactive, automation-first approach to infrastructure management, focusing on developing internal tools, automating routine tasks, and building robust testing mechanisms. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of underlying technology, be vendor-agnostic, and embody a strong DevOps mentality.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Proactive Maintenance & Monitoring: Perform regular health checks, configuration audits, firmware updates, and preventative maintenance on network devices (routers, switches, firewalls) and server infrastructure to identify and mitigate potential issues before they impact services.
  • Automation & Tooling Development: Design, develop, and implement internal tools and scripts (e.g., Python, Golang, Bash, etc) to automate network and system monitoring, configuration management, and critical failover testing procedures. Build robust, automation-driven processes and applications to streamline IT operations.
  • Infrastructure Reliability & Resilience: Contribute to the design and implementation of highly available and redundant infrastructure solutions, ensuring adherence to best practices for disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Troubleshooting & Incident Response: Provide advanced troubleshooting support for complex network and system issues, participating in incident response and root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for network diagrams, system configurations, automation scripts, and operational procedures. Actively cross-train with senior engineers to build knowledge redundancy within the team.
  • Technology Evaluation: Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies and solutions that enhance infrastructure reliability, performance, and automation capabilities, with a focus on underlying principles rather than specific vendor lock-in.
  • Vendor Management: Collaborate with hardware and software vendors on support, maintenance, and new technology integration.
  • Proactive Maintenance & Monitoring: Perform regular health checks, configuration audits, firmware updates, and preventative maintenance on network devices (routers, switches, firewalls) and server infrastructure to identify and mitigate potential issues before they impact services.
  • Implement, maintain and participate as needed in On-Call and Incident Response

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience: 5 or more years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on network engineering and systems administration.
  • Networking: Deep understanding of IPv6, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), switching technologies, VLANs, VPNs, and firewall concepts. Proven experience with various network reliability technologies such as BFD, VRRP, and demonstrating an intimate understanding of underlying network principles beyond specific vendor implementations.
  • Systems: Solid experience with server operating systems (BSD/Linux) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP).
  • Automation & Scripting: Strong proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Go, and/or Bash for infrastructure automation, monitoring, and data analysis.
  • Open Source: Practical experience with open-source networking software (e.g., TNSR, pfSense, SONiC, WireGuard) and Linux/BSD-based operating systems.
  • DevOps Mindset: Demonstrated experience with DevOps principles, including Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for infrastructure, and a strong desire to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Problem-Solving: Exceptional analytical and diagnostic skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues under pressure.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of clearly articulating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Location: Must reside within a 1-hour commute of Ann Arbor, MI.
  • Startup experience is a huge plus. Don’t underestimate the potential for culture shock coming into an environment where funding cycles dictate the balance between long-term vision, and short-term pragmatism.
