About e-Zinc

e-Zinc is an energy storage venture based in Toronto with a breakthrough technology poised to disrupt the market. As the global energy grid moves to higher levels of penetration of renewable energy, there is a surging need for affordable, flexible, long-duration energy storage. e-Zinc is uniquely positioned to meet this demand as the first company in the world to “metalize” electricity.

Backed by over CAD $80 million in funding from leading global strategic and financial investors - such as Toyota Ventures, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Eni, Evok Innovations, and BDC - e-Zinc has garnered international recognition for its proprietary technology and visionary roadmap. Highlights include:

  • $1M Grand Prize winner of the Impact Canada Charging the Future Challenge
  • Awarded a $1.6M grant from Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada
  • Secured over $12M in funding across three projects from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC)
  • Recipient of a USD $1.3M grant from the California Energy Commission

As e-Zinc moves toward commercialization, e-Zinc is expanding its team to bring our transformative technology to market and support the future of renewable energy.

Opportunity

e-Zinc is searching for an experienced and talented Sr. Mechanical Engineer to work within the Technology and Product Engineering department on the design, development, and assembly of battery pack and BESS products. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and building mechanically robust, reliable, and manufacturable components, sub-systems, and packaging up to engineering release of our proprietary zinc-based cell, battery packs, and DC-BESS products. This role offers the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of clean energy within a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Please note this is a 3-month contract.

Position Scope and Responsibilities

  • Mechanical design of battery cells and packs, including enclosures, interconnects, and structural components.
  • Mechanical design of external enclosures for DC-BESS units, including component placement, fixing, racking, fluid and electrical routing, and IP compliance
  • Delivery of mechanical components and packaged systems that achieve functional requirements, high volume manufacturing readiness, cost targets, and regulatory requirements.
  • Create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and BOMs using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Conduct tolerance stack-ups and FEA to validate design integrity and performance.
  • Collaborate with electrical, electrochemical, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet functional and integration requirements and DFM.
  • Drive engineering sample assembly and participate in functional testing;
  • Advocate and champion the engineering cycle through design improvement and integration of internal, field, and commercial feedback
  • Select and qualify materials and components based on thermal, structural, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive the development of test fixtures, jigs, and assembly processes to support pack and BESS validation and engineering sample assembly.
  • Lead and contribute to design reviews, DFMEA, root cause analysis, and continuous product improvement initiatives.
  • Support safety and compliance testing to relevant regulatory standards (e.g., UL, IEC, CE).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of mechanical design experience in energy storage, automotive, robotics, or industrial systems.
  • Registered with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical system design for high-power devices, thermal management, or structural analysis.
  • Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks) and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, CFX, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and working with external vendors and fabricators.
  • Strong design, problem-solving and hands-on skills; experience in engineering, prototyping, and industrial production environments and field troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with battery or energy storage system design and packaging is a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of DFM/DFA, GD&T, and materials selection for mechanical systems.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
